The Mexican Ambassador to Ghana Maria De
Los Angeles Arriola Aguirre has called for more participation of women in
policy and decision making in government.
She made this appeal when the Bridgewater
Project, which campaigns for women rights and advancement in Ghana paid a
courtesy call at her office in Accra.
She said over the past ten years,
women campaign has been on the attention of international policies
on gender equality and there has been a progress though there is
still much to be done.
According to Ambassador, her expectation
is to see Ghana adopt a political equality system
saying, “During Mexico’s 2016 election,
the president Mr. Enrique Pena Nieto in
consultation with Congress and all the political parties agreed to
present 50% women for the Parliamentary Candidates. In the end, 40%
of females became Parliamentarians.”
She reiterated the need for
educating children about the equality of men and women including making
laws for women rights to be respected.
She added that “Although we can’t
change the law, but can change the culture and attitude . On the World Women’s
Day, it was established in Mexico that companies having women
as Chief Executive Officers have 30% higher productivity
level than their male counterparts, which contributed to the living
standard of the people.”
