CIVIL SOCIETY PRAISES GRA COMMISSIONER-GENERAL ANTHONY K. SARPONG FOR DRIVING THE RESET AGENDA IN REVENUE MOBILISATION

Accra, Ghana – The Policy Analyst of Africa Eye Organisation, Mr. Abdallah Musah Alhassan, has commended the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong, for his leadership in advancing the Government's Reset Agenda through reforms aimed at strengthening efficiency, transparency, and accountability in domestic revenue mobilisation.

According to Mr. Abdallah, discussions about the Government's Reset Agenda would be incomplete without acknowledging the role being played by Mr. Sarpong, whose leadership at the GRA is helping to strengthen one of Ghana's most important public institutions responsible for financing national development.

He noted that Mr. Sarpong's extensive experience as the former Country Senior  Partner of KPMG Ghana has brought renewed focus to institutional efficiency, technology-driven tax administration, and improved compliance within the country's revenue collection system.

Africa Eye Organisation, a public policy think tank dedicated to promoting good governance, transparency, and institutional accountability across the continent , believes that effective revenue mobilisation is fundamental to Ghana's economic transformation, job creation, and sustainable development.

Mr. Abdallah further praised ongoing efforts by the GRA to strengthen revenue administration at Ghana's ports and other collection points through enhanced monitoring systems intended to reduce leakages, improve accountability, and protect public revenue.

He observed that improving domestic revenue collection remains one of the most effective ways of financing national infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and employment programmes without placing excessive dependence on external borrowing.

Among the reforms being pursued under the leadership of Commissioner-General Anthony K. Sarpong are:

Digitalisation of Tax Administration

Expansion of digital tax filing and electronic payment systems.

Upgrading the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS).

Greater automation to reduce manual processing and minimise revenue leakages.

Improved Taxpayer Data Management

Updating and cleansing taxpayer databases.

Eliminating duplicate Tax Identification Numbers (TINs).

Improving the accuracy and reliability of taxpayer records.

Technology-Driven Revenue Collection

Deploying data analytics to improve compliance.

Strengthening monitoring systems to detect tax evasion.

Leveraging technology to improve operational efficiency.

Enhanced Taxpayer Education

Nationwide taxpayer education campaigns.

Public awareness programmes encouraging voluntary tax compliance.

He stated that sustained improvements in revenue administration will enhance Government's ability to finance critical public services, create employment opportunities for young people, and strengthen investor confidence in Ghana's public institutions.

He called on citizens, businesses, and the informal sector to support the Ghana Revenue Authority by honouring their tax obligations, noting that voluntary tax compliance remains a shared national responsibility essential to Ghana's economic progress.

He concluded that strong institutions, transparent revenue administration, and accountable leadership remain indispensable pillars for achieving the objectives of the Government's Reset Agenda and building a more resilient and prosperous Ghana.
