Accra, August 4, 2026 – The Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings has appealed to the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, to intervene in an incident involving Mr. Yasir Mohammed, a young man from the Nima community whose alleged assault has sparked widespread public concern.
In a formal petition addressed to the Office of the Vice President, the Coalition requested an appointment to present Mr. Yasir Mohammed to Her Excellency, describing the proposed meeting as an important step toward promoting peace, reconciliation, and unity within Ghana's Zongo communities.
According to the Coalition, Mr. Yasir Mohammed recently became the subject of national attention after a video circulated on social media showing him after he was allegedly attacked with a knife. The Coalition states that the incident occurred following his community activism, particularly his efforts to mobilize young people to improve sanitation and the environment in the Nima–Mamobi area.
The organization expressed concern that the incident has generated anxiety among sections of the Zongo communities and warned that, if not addressed through dialogue and peaceful engagement, it could deepen political and social tensions.
National Chairman of the Coalition, Yahaya Alhassan, said the appeal to the Vice President reflects the Coalition's commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful and constitutional means rather than confrontation.
"Our appeal is not driven by politics but by our desire to preserve peace and social harmony. We believe the Vice President's intervention will reassure the youth that Ghana's leadership listens to their concerns and remains committed to justice, inclusion, and national unity," he stated.
The Coalition described Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as a compassionate national leader whose moral authority and commitment to inclusive governance make her well positioned to help foster reconciliation.
Drawing from Hausa cultural values, the petition referred to the Vice President as "Mamankowa"—a mother to all—symbolizing a leader who embraces every citizen without discrimination. The Coalition noted that, during moments of uncertainty, communities naturally look to leaders who can unite people and inspire hope.
The organization believes that granting Mr. Yasir Mohammed an audience with the Vice President would send a strong message that the Government remains committed to protecting all citizens, rejecting political violence, and encouraging peaceful civic participation.
The Coalition also expressed confidence that such a meeting would help calm tensions, rebuild public confidence, and encourage young people to channel their energies into community development rather than conflict.
Established in collaboration with diplomatic missions and other stakeholders, the Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings says its mission is to promote unity among Zongo communities, discourage all forms of political violence, strengthen social cohesion, and support sustainable development across Ghana.
The Coalition reaffirmed its commitment to working with government institutions, traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and development partners to ensure that Ghana's Zongo communities continue to be recognized for their resilience, diversity, and contributions to national development.
As the nation continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, the Coalition called on all political actors, community leaders, and the youth to reject violence, embrace dialogue, and safeguard the peace for which Ghana is internationally respected.
The petition concluded with a respectful appeal for an appointment with the Vice President, expressing confidence that her intervention would contribute significantly to healing divisions, restoring confidence, and reinforcing the values of peace, justice, and national unity.
