Mr. Yahaya Alhassan Recalls Hon. Alex Segbefia's Role in Promoting Peace in Zongo Communities
Accra, Ghana – The National Chairman of the Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings, Mr. Yahaya Alhassan, has paid glowing tribute to Alex Segbefia for his significant contribution to promoting peace and national unity through the Coalition's maiden football sensitization campaign against political vigilantism.
According to Mr. Alhassan, the initiative was launched in 2012 at a time when political vigilantism was beginning to threaten the peace and stability of several Zongo communities across Ghana. Concerned about the growing tensions, the Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings organized a football event to educate young people and the general public on the importance of peaceful political participation and national cohesion.
Mr. Alhassan recalled that Hon. Alex Segbefia played a key role in supporting the initiative, encouraging the use of sports as a platform to unite people across political, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. He said the event successfully brought together residents of Zongo communities and the wider public to promote dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
"The football sensitization programme demonstrated that sports can serve as a powerful tool for peacebuilding. At a time when political vigilantism was beginning to eat into the fabric of our Zongo communities, Hon. Alex Segbefia stood with us in promoting unity instead of division," Mr. Alhassan stated.
He noted that the campaign helped raise public awareness about the dangers of political violence and encouraged the youth to reject vigilantism in favour of peaceful democratic engagement.
Mr. Alhassan further praised Hon. Segbefia, who now serves as Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, for his continued commitment to public service and nation-building. He expressed hope that the values of peace, tolerance, and unity championed during the 2012 campaign would continue to inspire future generations.
The National Chairman also urged political parties, civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and religious institutions to continue investing in initiatives that promote peaceful elections and strengthen social cohesion across Ghana.
He reaffirmed the Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings' commitment to supporting programmes that foster peace, unity, and responsible citizenship, emphasizing that sustainable national development can only be achieved in an atmosphere of harmony and mutual respect.
